Calculating the consumption of an electrical appliance

Share

You can very easily calculate the annual energy consumption of an electrical appliance. To be precise, you must consider the power of the appliance in watts, its daily duration of use in hours and its annual duration of use in days.

The calculation is the following: annual consumption = (power of the appliance) x (daily duration of use in hours) x (annual duration of use in days) / 1,000.

This is how you get the annual consumption of an appliance in kWh. Let’s take a few concrete examples!

Summary
The consumption of your refrigerator
The power consumption of your dishwasher
The power consumption of your wine cellar
Why is it important to calculate the consumption of your electrical appliances?

The consumption of your refrigerator

Depending on its size, and most importantly on its energy class, your refrigerator can be more or less energy consuming. For example, the Schneider 536L refrigerator freezer annually consumes 424 kWh. Simultaneously, the 112L table top model consumes 150 kWh per year while the 208L refrigerator with 2 doors has a consumption of 208 kWh per year.

The power consumption of your dishwasher

For dishwashers, manufacturers usually indicate the power consumption of a cycle. To figure out the annual consumption of your appliance, you must multiply this number by the number of cycles you run throughout the year.

So, the SDW1444V vintage dishwasher consumes 0.93 kWh per cycle, while the SCLT6444XO 14 place settings uses 0.83 kWh per cycle. At a rate of one cycle per day, the first model reaches a consumption of 339 kWh per year versus 303 kWh per year for the latter.

The power consumption of your wine cellar

Are you wondering how much power a wine cellar consumes per year? Then again, it depends on the appliance, its power and its energy class. For instance, the Schneider integrated wine cellar consumes 138 kWh per year, the 62 bottles model consumes 190 kWh per year and the 20L built-in model consumes 135 kWh per year.

Why is it important to calculate the consumption of your electrical appliances?

Paying attention to your power consumption is positive for the environment, as well as for your wallet. Calculating the consumption of your electrical appliances is part of this process. To be precise, it allows you to know how much each appliance costs you on an annual basis.

So, before you purchase a new appliance, it is recommended to pay attention to its energy class and annual consumption.
